Zoeller M63 vs M53 Sump Pump Review: Warranty vs Price

(Last Updated On: November 17, 2023)

I make good choices and bad choices every single day. However, knowing what the best choice is can be difficult to figure out. When considering the purchase of the Zoeller M63 vs M53 ask yourself these two questions:

1. Do I want to save money now but maybe spend the same amount of money again in 3 years?

2. Do I want to spend more money now but save more money over the next 5 years?

If the budget is tight and you must not spend an extra $100 right now, then buy the Zoeller M53 sump pump .

That extra $100 will get you a better-quality pump with a 5-year warranty instead of a 3-year warranty. That extra two years of warranty is possible because of the upgraded switch assembly and impeller parts on the Zoeller M63 sump pump.

Buy the longer lasting, higher quality Zoeller M63 sump pump.

Zoeller M63 vs M53 Sump Pump Comparison

The two pumps are identical except for the better-quality float assembly parts, cast iron impeller and base and a lighted power cord plug.

The lighted power cord plug lets you know that there is electric power available for the pump to use. So, if there is ever a problem you can tell instantly whether the problem might be a tripped circuit breaker.

Currently the Zoeller M63 is $100 more than the Zoeller M53 sump pump. The Zoeller M53 has a three year warranty and the Zoeller M63 is five years. But which one is the best buy for me?

Keep in mind that each pump should last longer than their warranties. One customer replaced his still working M63 after 16 years.

Also, I cannot list actual prices since the prices might change. So, please bear with me on this Zoeller M63 vs M53 sump pump comparison.

Longer Lasting 2-Pole Snap Action Vertical Float Switch

The Zoeller M63 vs M53 debate boils down to the improved sump pump switch on the Zoeller M63 sump pump.

The M63 has an additional electric contact blade which creates less heat and contact pitting. Which means that the switch assembly will last longer than on the M53 model.

Additionally, Zoeller has added a vitron boot to provide extra protection from water leaking into the switch head. That is in addition to the normal seal found on the M53 model.

M63 Cast Iron Propeller vs M53 Reinforced Plastic Impeller

The M63 cast iron propeller will take much more abuse from sand, dirt, and hard water minerals than the M53 sump pump will. The Zoeller M53 impeller is made  with a metal insert and glass-filled thermoplastic.

Cast Iron Pump Base Vs Plastic Base

The plastic base of the M53 sump pump can be broken if the pump is accidentally dropped. Whereas the cast iron base on the M63 sump pump would not break. Also, the cast iron dissipates heat better than plastic. Which would help prolong the life of the motor by preventing overheating.

Selling The House In 3-5 Years?

If you plan to sell the house in two years then save $100 and buy the Zoeller M53. However, if you are not going to sell the house then consider saving money in the long run by buying the Zoeller M63.

10 Foot LED Lighted Power Cord vs 9 Foot Power Cord

The lighted plug lets you know instantly if the pump is getting power or not. So, if the pump stops running for some reason you can more quickly determine where the problem might be.

Sump pumps must be plugged into a GFCI protected electrical outlet. So, that extra one foot just might reach your electrical outlet.

The Zoeller M63 and M53 come with a predrilled vent hole. However, that hole gets plugged up pretty fast. So, another vent hole needs to be made.

As shown in the image and installation video drill a 3/16-inch hole in the discharge pipe. It should be located just above the point where the pump turns on. Angle the hole downwards.

A little water will spray out of that hole while the pump is operating. So, make sue that hole is going to spray that water downwards into the sump basin.

The purpose of the vent hole is to remove air from the system because the pump cannot pump air. Without the air removed the pump cannot self-prime. The pump needs water to prime the pump and continue pumping water.
